Welcome to Marco Island, Florida
Before being taken over by modern day population, Marco Island was settled by the Calusa Native Americans and country pioneers. Back when Christopher Columbus explored this great country, the Calusa Native Americans were already settled along the Florida coast making use of the state's natural resources and raw materials. In the early 1500s, Spanish explorers began settling the land of Florida in search of land and freshwater for their survival. Did you know that it wasn't until after the Civil War that Marco Island was habited by our modern day people? Although the Calusa Native Americans were the original known settlers of Marco Island, the first actually credited discoverer of the island was William Thomas Collier. He came across Marco Island in the year 1870 when the Island was known as "Old Marco Village."
